New Emergency Vehicles Arrive in Petersburg

PETERSBURG — In a fitting salute to their dedication, firefighters raced out of their own ceremony last Saturday to respond to a call. Several emergency crew members exited Fire Station Number 3 as two new vehicles were placed into service.

10232-Petersburg,-VA-(1).JPGOn that day, there would be no fresh cookies, cold punch and live bagpipe music for several of the faithful emergency responders answering that call.

While they may return to stale cookies and warm punch later that evening, odds are they will happily trade that for their 2017 KME Severe Service Pumper and 2017 International 4300 Durastar/PL titan Custom Medic Unit. Both vehicles were placed in service at Fire Station Number 3 on 1320 Farmer Street shortly around noon on October 28th.

Hazleton City Fire Department Adds New Truck

HAZLETON, PA — The city fire department has welcomed a new family member. Rescue 3 — a 2018 KME rescue/pumper truck —joined the city’s fleet of three pumpers and two aerial trucks Friday at 10:30 a.m.

The $455,000 custom-built vehicle was ordered in August 2016 and purchased with federal Community Development funds through a six-year lease-to-own deal.

Since 2002, all fire department apparatus has been purchased with Community Development money, Fire Chief Donald Leshko said. Each year about $6,000 or less will come out of the general fund to pay interest, he said.

The apparatus replaces a 1992 pumper truck that was purchased out of the city’s general fund.

Bakersfield (CA) Fire Department Standardizing Engines with KME Severe Service Cabs and Flat-Roof Bodies The Bakersfield (CA) Fire Department is standardizing its fleet of engines through a seven-year contract with KME that has delivered five pumpers thus far, with a sixth engine in production and expected to be delivered later this year. Ross Kelly, Bakersfield’s deputy chief of special services, says that standardization is important in the department, especially on its engines. “We have six KME front line engines,” he says, “and with these KME engines, which we have been getting since 2012, we configured them all the same so our firefighters know where the equipment is on any of the vehicles they ride on.”

Quick-Attack Truck Handles Brush, Vehicle, and Other Fires and Is Backup Medic Unit The Green Township (OH) Fire Department needed to replace a 1968 Jeep brush truck that had a single seat, a pump beside the driver, no roof, and no heater. But, the department wanted its new truck to be a multiple-use vehicle that could also run to vehicle, dumpster, and rubbish fires as well as serve as a backup medical rig. “We also wanted the new truck to haul multiple firefighters, which meant a crew cab,” says Todd Baird, Green Township’s chief. “The other major thing we wanted was a truck with super singles on it, instead of dual rear wheels, because of all the mud we have to deal with in Ohio. We have a lot of farmland where we often have to get to the other side of a plowed field in order to put out a fire.”
